This project aimed to document the remarkable work of sculptor Spencer Byles in the forests of Borneo. Spencer crafts sculptures on-site using natural materials he finds in the surrounding forest, creating pieces deeply connected to their environment. The photography involved setting up lights under the dense rainforest canopy to highlight the intricate details of each sculpture.
Captured in 2018 in Kuching, this project was a collaborative effort between Spencer and me to record his captivating creations amidst the lush Bornean rainforest.
The most notable challenges were transporting lighting equipment to remote sculpture locations and enduring relentless mosquitoes during the shoots.
One unforgettable experience was shooting before sunrise and witnessing the forest awaken to a symphony of sounds—a moment that amplified the connection between the sculptures and their natural surroundings.
