Intimate & Ultimate Guide to Kuching Gastronomy

The primary objective of this project was to visually document the rich and diverse gastronomy scene of Kuching. From bustling markets and humble hawker stalls to traditional kopitiams and modern restaurants, the photographs serve as a visual companion to the book Intimate & Ultimate Guide to Kuching Gastronomy authored by Karen Shepherd and Marian Chin. My goal was to authentically capture the spirit of Kuching’s food culture as it naturally unfolds in everyday settings.

Using a mix of documentary and street photography approaches, the images highlight both the vibrancy and subtle charm of food-related environments. The focus of the project centered around gastronomy—documenting not just food, but the spaces, people, and cultural rhythms surrounding its production and consumption.

This project was photographed in and around Kuching city, covering a wide range of locations that reflect the diverse food ecosystem of the city.

While there wasn’t a specific event tied to the project, the intention was clear—to preserve and celebrate the essence of Kuching’s culinary heritage. One of the more rewarding challenges was to photograph scenes without disrupting them, maintaining the candid integrity of everyday life in the local food scene.

The most memorable aspect of the project was seeing the final images published in the book. Witnessing the visuals come to life in print and paired with thoughtful writing gave the project a tangible legacy—one that honors Kuching’s gastronomic identity.
