PadunganPadungan History & Humanity in a Heritage precinct of Kuching, Sarawak, MalaysiaPadungan

This project was commissioned by author James Yong, who aimed to spotlight a part of Kuching that is often overlooked in mainstream publications—the Padungan area. The primary goal was to capture the essence of Padungan through its people, street scenes, and historical landmarks, creating a visual narrative that complements the written stories and brings the neighborhood to life.

Utilizing a blend of street and documentary photography, the project focused on capturing the authentic spirit of Padungan: its layered architecture, longstanding businesses, and the everyday moments that define its identity.

Photographed in 2022, the work took place around Kuching, with a particular focus on the Padungan district—an area rich with cultural history and unique urban character.

The project stemmed from the author’s desire to highlight a neighborhood often absent in historical and cultural publications. While there were no major challenges during the shoot, the opportunity to be present during interviews allowed me to immerse deeper into the community, giving more context and emotion to the images I captured.

One of the most enriching aspects of this project was listening to personal stories from residents during interviews. These moments not only guided the photographic approach but also deepened my understanding of Padungan as more than a location—it’s a living archive of Kuching’s evolving urban story.
