This project documented one of Kuching’s oldest Chinese opera troupes, the Yi Sing Fukien Dramatic Association, established in the 1950s. The photography focused on capturing the backstage preparations and the art of Chinese opera during their performance at a temple celebration. Using a documentary style, the project aimed to preserve the practices and stories of the performers.

Captured in 2019 at a theatre stage across from Hong San Si Temple during a celebratory event, the project highlighted a diminishing art form as fewer young performers are stepping into the tradition.

There were no significant challenges, but the experience offered a unique opportunity to witness and document an intricate cultural practice.

A standout element of this project was discovering that each performer memorizes the script for all characters in the play, showcasing incredible dedication and skill.
